Below is a brief summary of the forms of motorsports available, namely karting, circuit racing and non-circuit racing.
The 3 main forms of 4-wheeled motorsports in South Africa, namely:
- Karting – Karting is an extremely popular sport. One can compete from the age of 5 upwards. Speeds range from 50 kp/h to 160 kp/h! The sport caters for all budgets and different levels of experience.Their is room for drivers competing for shear fun and those who are serious in making headway in motorsport. Many F1 drivers started their careers in karting. It is a great platform for any race driver. If you reach the top in karting you can compete in the top level of any form of the sport.
- Circuit Racing – Circuit racing in SA has many classes allowing for mostly all vehicles with a roll cage to compete. From ages 14 upwards, one can compete on any of our fantastic world class circuits nationwide. As in any form of our sport, you can compete as a hobbiest or serious professional.. For the technical minded, the speed addicts and the serious competitive individuals, circuit racing creates a safe environment in which to compete. Further breaking circuit racing down, there are both saloon/production cars and open-wheeled single seaters such as the like of Formula 1.
- Non-Circuit Racing – From rallying to long distance off-road racing through to drifting and drag racing, whatever your passion, there is a large spectrum for all of these categories. Dirt racing is awesome, and our great wilderness allows for breathtaking rallying or long distance off-road racing. For sideways action drifting is a no-brainer, and finally for those interested in brute power, drag racing might just be for you!

There are 3 main levels of competition, with their governing bodies, that the various categories of motorsport and their classes fall under:
- Club Level Racing: for they who just want to race to satisfy their need for speed/interest, as a means to de-stress from your working-week! Club Championship Racing also serves as an Entry into the world of highly competitive racing, should your ultimate desire is to go that route.. Most of the club championship series are held in Gauteng, with a couple in Cape Town and East London. At the end of the racing season a Club Champion for each class of the various categories IS CROWNED One needs to acquire a club championship competition license to be allowed to compete… Detonation does offer the service to our clients in acquiring competition licenses.
- Regional Racing: more challenging and competitive than Club racing, regional racing is in essence the next stepping stone. One can either compete with a regional championship or club championship license. However if you wish to earn a Regional and National license a competitor needs to compete in a minimum of 3 events and finally pass a written examination on all of the ins and outs of the rules of racing. Once this process is complete the committee will decide whether you are ready for full on Regional Regional and National Championship racing. There are many categories in the Northern Regions Championship, which makes this level of extremely popular. At the end of the season
- Regional Champions of the multitude of classes are crowned.
National Championship Racing– The pinnacle of motor racing occurs in these championship events. We have of the best professional drivers world wide, proven by the fact that we have produced many world champions. The competition is fierce, and engineering know how together with precision equipment both vital. The level of effort required to get to the top of any National Championship field is huge, but the taste of the champagne even sweater!!! There are 3 main series in which to compete in a number of categories from the age of 15 and up. Some of the cars reach speeds over 300 kp/h.
